Thank you on behalf of the Jewers family for reaching this page.
Matthew was a much loved ‘Heavy’ and supporter of the work The Foundation does.
He joined Richmond from school in 1977 and played for all sides from the first team through to the Heavies as a wing forward.
He was a very skilled ball player and was part of a strong Richmond sevens set up in the early 80’s.
His love for the game was only surpassed by his love of the club house and touring. He was hugely popular with everyone he met on and off the pitch.
He also played for Grasshoppers and Old Priorians alongside many of his old school friends.
He toured the world with the Solarians and literally so with The Turks Head.
He was famously named ‘gold top’ after his party piece and was asked by the Crown Prince of Malaysia to perform for him. He also features in Gavin Hastings autobiography.
His sudden departure will leave a big hole with all those who knew him.
RIP Matt

I’m so sorry – I have only just heard about the very sad passing of Matt. Such a gentleman and taken far too soon,
A highly professional podiatrist and a lovely character.
Remembering you Matt – such a loss to all who knew you.
Such a lovely man
Miss you Matt and always will!

The king of bear hugs and a truly kind and wonderful man X
Great man sorely missed never forgotten
Your engaging smile and classic sense of humour will be missed but not forgotten. Best Balderdash player in history – the “pineapple” man.
Way too soon.
‘always a pleasure, never a chore’ 🙂 Fondest memories which will stay with me. NickyNackyNooo. xxx
