Finding Her Voice: Beauty’s Story

This is the story of how Atlas South Africa has helped to Beauty transform from a shy and unsure girl to a confident individual who has found her voice, a place to belong, and a vision of her future.

Beauty’s story is one of resilience, courage and transformation.

At just 16 years old, Beauty Batala has already faced many of the challenges that shape the lives of young people growing up in Masiphumelele, a vibrant but struggling community in South Africa. While the area is full of energy and resilience, it is also marked by unemployment, overcrowding and limited opportunities and resources for young people.

She lives with her mother and siblings and attends the local high school, Masi High, where she was first introduced to Atlas South Africa. At that time, she was shy and uncertain, trying to find her place. Although she attended school, her confidence was low, and she often felt unsure of herself. The idea of stepping outside her comfort zone, particularly into a sport like rugby, seemed daunting.

Coming from a community where opportunities for girls are limited and where sport is often seen as something meant for boys, many people around her did not understand why a girl would want to play rugby, and some even discouraged her.

Yet, something inside her pushed her to try. To build confidence and break the routine. Beauty wanted to challenge the status quo.

Joining Atlas South Africa marked the beginning of a new chapter in Beauty’s life.

Through the Ocean View and Masiphumelele High School programme, she found more than just a place to play sport. She discovered a supportive team environment where she has formed friendships and feels accepted and encouraged. The rugby sessions challenged her physically, but they also helped her grow mentally and emotionally. And, her confidence began to build.

Beyond the rugby field, the Atlas Media Centre opened new opportunities. By learning computer skills, Beauty gained a sense of achievement and pride in mastering something new. These experiences helped her realise that she was capable of far more than she once believed.

The transformation in Beauty over the past year has been remarkable. Once quiet and unsure, she now stands confidently among her teammates. She has begun leading warm-ups during training sessions and actively supporting younger players who join the programme. These leadership opportunities helped her realise that her voice matters.

Her increased confidence has also carried into the classroom. With greater discipline and focus developed through rugby, Beauty has seen positive changes in her academic attainment.

One of the most powerful changes in Beauty’s journey has been her ability to advocate for herself and for others. During team meetings, she confidently shares her ideas and suggests strategies. She is not afraid to speak up when she feels something is unfair or when other girls are overlooked, consistently encouraging inclusion and ensuring that every player feels valued.

Today, Beauty’s ambitions stretch far beyond what she once imagined. Her experience through Atlas has not only built her confidence but also shaped her dreams. She hopes to study fields such as Accountancy, Sports Science, Physiotherapy or Coaching – careers that would allow her to stay connected to the sport that helped transform her life.

She is also passionate about advocating for women’s sport. Beauty believes girls should have the same opportunities as boys to participate, compete and succeed. Her goal is to help bring greater recognition and funding to women’s sports so that future generations of girls won’t face the same barriers she once did.

Through the support, opportunities and mentorship provided by Atlas South Africa, Beauty has been given a voice and a vision.
