Kamran’s Story – TackleLondon

Kamran’s Story

Kamran grew up in Croydon, a place where the streets can be unpredictable, and opportunities for young people are limited. Knife crime is a harsh reality, and too many young people find themselves with nowhere to go. By the age of fifteen, many have already faced serious trauma, and the lack of safe spaces leaves them vulnerable.

For Kamran, rugby changed everything. His sister, Shannon, knows just how important the sport has been in his life.

“If Kamran wasn’t at rugby, I wouldn’t know where he’d be—hanging around on the streets, maybe even in prison.” – Shannon, Cameron’s Sister.

But instead, he found his passion.

“Rugby is something I really love,” Kamran says. “I’ve got a lot of friends through the sport, and it keeps me away from all the bad stuff that happens nowadays. When I’m at rugby, I feel like I’m enjoying myself and comfortable.”

It wasn’t always like this for him. Confidence was once a struggle.

“I’ve never been confident in my life. I used to be scared to stand up and speak. I’d be shaking, thinking everyone would laugh at me. But now, I feel more confident. Playing this sport has helped my well-being.”

The power of support cannot be overstated. For many young people like Kamran, hearing simple words—”I believe in you, I support you, I’ve got your back”—can be life-changing. Being surrounded by a community that genuinely believes in them makes all the difference.

The reality for many families in Croydon is tough. Financial struggles mean they can’t always afford to send their children to clubs or offer them experiences outside of school, no matter how much they want to. That’s why community programmes and rugby clubs play such a crucial role.

“We don’t just support these young people—we have a duty to do so. We want to reach even more of them, to give them a safe home where they can follow a different path and create a different story for themselves.”

For Kamran, that story is still being written, but one thing is certain—rugby has given him focus, direction, and the chance to be the best version of himself. His sister sees the difference every day.

“This has made him focus on becoming a better person in life. I’m just so grateful that my little brother is involved in something so good for him. I’m really proud of him.” – Shannon, Kam’s Sister.
