At The Atlas Foundation, we’re proud to support the incredible work of the star* scheme—an initiative changing lives through the power of sport, connection, and community.
One young person benefiting from this support is Alfie, who lost his dad to suicide four and a half years ago. Since then, he has struggled with PTSD and ongoing anger issues. Referred to star* through his school, Alfie has been part of the scheme for the past two years, finding stability and encouragement in a challenging time.
Alfie lives with his mum, who works extended hours during the week and alternate weekends just to make ends meet. School has been a tough journey for him, and after facing exclusion, he now attends a part-time educational setting that incorporates rugby into its programme.
The leadership of star* has been a constant support for the family—not just for Alfie, but for his mum too. From helping with transport to making sure Alfie can access rugby sessions at the local club, the team ensures no barrier stands in the way of his participation. Although Alfie can be hard on himself about his performance, his mum says the coaches are always there with patience, encouragement, and belief in him. Thanks to their support, he’s now more willing to open up—especially when school feels overwhelming.
The impact of walking into a rugby club and being welcomed by a team that feels like family is profound. For Alfie, seeing positive relationships among his peers has helped him understand what emotional regulation looks and feels like. When his mum is able to attend training and matches, she’s welcomed with open arms. She told us she has “grown to love attending” and values the warmth and inclusion they’ve both found in the club community.
This year, the club is even helping fund a tour that Alfie and his sister will be joining—something that feels like a real holiday for a family who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to get away. Last summer, Alfie also had the chance to attend a gifted activity weekend on Exmoor. His mum described it as “incredible”—he got to try things he’d never imagined, from horse riding to swimming and climbing. He came home buzzing with confidence and joy, an experience that meant the world to them both.
To Alfie and his mum, the star* scheme has been nothing short of life-changing. It has opened doors they didn’t know existed, offering opportunities, joy, and a sense of belonging when they needed it most.
