In a fitting tribute to his unparalleled contribution to business, sport, and charity, Sir Richard ‘Dicky’ Evans has been honoured with a knighthood in the New Year Honours list. Known for his unwavering passion for Cornwall and Kenya, his remarkable achievements continue to inspire both regions.
A Legacy Built on Resilience and Vision
Richard ‘Dicky’ Evans has been a cornerstone of Cornish sport for decades. His journey began in the 1990s when he took the helm of Penzance & Newlyn RFC, rescuing the club from financial turmoil. His financial backing played a pivotal role in the club’s evolution into the Cornish Pirates, a rise that saw the team ascend to the Championship level.
A Global Impact: From Cornwall to Kenya
Evans’ philanthropic spirit is equally reflected in his work abroad. As a civil engineer, he played an instrumental role in improving water supplies for horticultural growers in Kenya during the 1970s. By the 1980s, he had founded a successful horticultural business, further bolstering Kenya’s economy. His ventures were not just about profit; they had a lasting social impact, improving the lives of many in the region.
In addition to his business and charitable endeavors, Evans’ company, Hemingways Travel, has long supported both Cornish Pirates and Truro City FC, even sponsoring their shirts. His continued financial and emotional investment has been vital to the clubs’ successes, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the region’s sporting legacy.
“I couldn’t have been more surprised or more honoured.”
“It is impossible to thank everyone individually for the help that they have given me over the years, in life, business, sport and charity. This honour is simply recognition of everyone’s efforts over decades, without which none of my ventures would have succeeded.
“I must however single out one person. Thank you to my wonderful and eternally beautiful wife who will now be known, entirely appropriately, as Lady Evans.
“She has been by my side for almost 50 years, and neither family, friendships, business, sport nor charity would have succeeded without her.”
We wish Sir Evans all the very best as he continues to inspire and lead, and we look forward to the continued success of his remarkable ventures.
