As part of the Atlas South Africa All Schools initiative, the Atlas Media Centres at Masiphumelele and Ocean View High Schools have become vital hubs of learning, safety, and growth. More than just study spaces, these centres are welcoming environments where learners can explore, create, and develop essential academic and digital skills in a supportive atmosphere.
Empowering Digital Literacy and Academic Growth
Both Media Centres play a key role in advancing digital literacy and academic development among learners from Grades 8 to 11, serving over 1,200 students at Masiphumelele High School and many more at Ocean View High.
Every class participates in coding lessons, introducing learners to programming and problem-solving skills that are increasingly vital in today’s technology-driven world.
For Grade 12 learners, the focus shifts toward academic and career readiness. The Media Centres provide guidance with assignments, university and bursary applications, and other digital tasks essential for future success. Learners also receive training in computer fundamentals, digital safety, and responsible online behaviour.
Through consistent homework support and access to technology, students gain the confidence and competence needed to excel academically and navigate the digital world safely.
Multiple Roles, One Purpose
The Atlas Media Centres fulfil many roles, each united by a single purpose: to support learning, growth, and connection.
Learners and teachers can borrow books for reading or research, nurturing a love for literacy and curiosity. With access to computers, eBooks, online databases, and educational software, students are empowered to bridge the digital divide and strengthen their research and information literacy.
Facilitators provide hands-on guidance, teaching learners how to find, evaluate, and reference reliable information while promoting digital citizenship and safe internet use. Teachers regularly bring classes to the centres for library lessons, project work, and curriculum-aligned research sessions.
Beyond academics, the centres also offer spaces for recreation and reflection; from board games and educational videos to quiet study corners and group discussion areas. This balance of learning and leisure ensures that every learner can thrive in an environment that meets their individual needs.
Beyond the Classroom: Mentorship and Holistic Support
The Atlas Media Centres extend their impact beyond academics, serving as safe and inclusive spaces where learners receive mentorship, guidance, and emotional support.
Through structured programmes that combine academics with personal growth, such as rugby coaching and mentorship sessions, students build confidence, discipline, and teamwork skills that carry them well beyond the classroom.
For learners at both Masiphumelele and Ocean View, the Atlas Media Centres are far more than physical spaces. They are safe havens where young people can learn, grow, and dream. By blending technology access, academic support, and mentorship, these centres continue to nurture confidence, community connection, and hope for a brighter future.
