The Atlas Foundation South Africa, in partnership with the communities of Ocean View and Masiphumelele, were generously hosted by the Cape Town 10s for an Atlas coaching clinic overseen by SARLA, former legends of the game. In a country where rugby is more than just a sport, and is a unifying force, this Atlas coaching clinic at the Cape Town 10s brought together young children from some of Cape Town’s most marginalised communities, giving them a chance to flourish both on and off the pitch.
Transforming Communities Through Rugby
Masiphumelele and Ocean View are communities facing immense challenges—poverty, crime, and unsafe environments that limit opportunities for young people. Without safe spaces to grow and learn, many children are left vulnerable to the harsh realities of their surroundings. But through rugby, The Atlas Foundation is changing that narrative.
Former Springboks Giving Back
The heart of this initiative lies in the continued support from the Cape Town 10s along with the commitment of former Springbok legends and provincial players who dedicate time to coaching and mentoring these young athletes. For them, giving back is second nature—a way to use their platform to inspire the next generation.
“They had the opportunity to play at the highest level, and now they’re giving back,” a SARLA representative explained. “It’s about more than rugby—it’s about creating role models and empowering these kids to believe in themselves.”
“We’ve introduced a rugby program that gives these kids a chance to flourish. When they’re on the field, they’re not just playing a game—they’re building confidence, learning discipline, and dreaming bigger.”
Rugby: A Tool for Social Cohesion
Rugby has long been a powerful force for unity in South Africa, transcending racial and social divides. The Atlas Foundation recognizes this and leverages the sport as a tool for social cohesion and personal growth.
“The enthusiasm, the spirit, and the fact that it’s played by everyone makes it such an important part of our national identity. We’re ensuring that rugby remains accessible to all, using it to create opportunities and instil values that extend far beyond the game.
The beauty of using rugby as a vehicle is that we’re not just building athletes—we’re building leaders. These kids are gaining the confidence and skills they need to thrive in whatever path they choose.”
Building Confidence, Education, and a Brighter Future
Beyond the game, the program focuses on education and self-esteem, equipping young people with the tools to succeed in life. The coaches involved are not just teaching rugby—they’re instilling discipline, teamwork, and a sense of belonging.
Keeping the Spirit Alive
The Cape Town 10s, the largest social sporting event in South Africa, was more than a tournament hosting these children to a coaching clinic—it was a testament to the unwavering commitment and support to The Atlas Foundation in their empowering communities through sport.
The Atlas Coaching Clinic sponsored by the CT 10s, will remain a highlight in the lives of the children who took to the field—children who now believe they can achieve more, dream bigger, and break the cycle of adversity.
With every tackle, try, and cheer, The Atlas Foundation is changing lives, one step at a time.
