Esther’s Story

Esther Banda’s story began at Jamo Secondary School, where her curiosity about extracurricular activities led her to join BPF’s Achinyamata Tikambilane club—translated as “Let Youth Discuss” in English. Initially hesitant due to past experiences with HIV/AIDS learning clubs, Esther was drawn to the club’s focus on Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and the chance to explore important topics affecting young people in her community.

As she became more involved, Esther discovered a surprising passion—making reusable sanitary pads. At first, she doubted her ability to master the skill, but with guidance from the club’s mentors and a growing sense of purpose, she persevered. Esther not only learned how to create the pads but also gained a deeper understanding of menstrual health and the challenges of menstrual poverty faced by many girls in her community.

Her new skills sparked a powerful transformation. Esther took her knowledge beyond the club, turning her pad-making into a small entrepreneurial venture. Selling the reusable pads, she provided an affordable and sustainable solution for local women and girls, ensuring access to menstrual hygiene products while challenging the stigma around menstruation.

Yet, Esther’s impact extended far beyond business. Inspired by her personal growth, she returned to her school and community as an advocate for menstrual health education. She began sharing her experiences, teaching others to make pads, and raising awareness about menstrual hygiene and reproductive health. Her efforts not only equipped young women with practical tools but also fostered open conversations about dignity, health, and empowerment.

Esther’s journey stands as a testament to resilience and the power of opportunity. What started as a spark of curiosity grew into a profound personal transformation—one that continues to inspire change in her community. Through her courage, resourcefulness, and determination, Esther reminds us all of the extraordinary impact one person can make when given the chance to learn, grow, and lead.

“I hope my story inspires others to pursue positive change projects like mine.”
