Safeguarding Children’s Right to Play: International Day of Play

International Day of Play is a global recognition of the power and importance of play. It is a universal language, a cornerstone of childhood, and a fundamental right that we are committed to protecting for children around the world.

A Universal Right

Play is one of the first ways a child learns about the world. It is central to healthy development, forming friendships, and gaining confidence. Play is a symbol of the innocence of childhood and the freedom of imagination.

But for many children, their right to play is far from guaranteed.

Millions of children live in poverty worldwide. While every child’s story is unique, their right to play is universal. No matter where they live or what obstacles they face, every child deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of play.

International Day of Play unifies communities, organisations, and global institutions, such as the UN, to champion children’s wellbeing. This year’s theme, ‘Protect Play, Protect Childhood‘, captures the essence that happy, healthy childhoods are built on opportunities to play.

At The Atlas Foundation, we are proud to stand alongside this global movement. We hear and see every day how play can be a force for positive change. Harnessing the power of play helps protect, educate, and empower children in some of the world’s most challenging contexts, enabling them to stay in school, overcome inequity, and heal from trauma.

Rugby Is Our Play

For the children supported through our network of partner projects, rugby provides a safe and fun environment where some of the world’s most vulnerable children can simply be children.

Each of our local partners serves communities with different needs and challenges, but one thing remains constant: the transformative power of play. Rugby brings children together regardless of race, religion, or gender. Its values create belonging and a safety net of support.

Since 2014, we have reached more than 270,000 children around the world. Behind every number is a child who has been given the opportunity to play freely, safely, and with purpose. That means more than 270,000 children have had their right to play protected.

Through rugby, children are empowered to discover strengths they may never have realised they possessed. They begin to believe in futures beyond the circumstances they arrive with. Time and again, their stories remind us that every child deserves the chance to grow up in an environment free from barriers and adversity, where they can play, learn, and thrive.
