Programmes Success

The Atlas Foundation introduced rugby programmes at Masiphumelele and Ocean View High Schools in 2019 with a vision to unite, uplift and empower young people through sport. At the time, neither school had an established rugby programme. Through dedicated coaching, mentorship and structured development opportunities, learners have since progressed into competitive school rugby and representative teams.

Enkosi’s journey began when she joined training sessions alongside her brother, Vuyolwethu Mejeni, another promising player emerging from the programme. Competing regularly with the U14 boys this season, her natural ability and determination soon caught the attention of coaches, who encouraged her to attend the Western Province U15 Girls trials.

Wider Atlas Success

Her subsequent selection and outstanding performance at provincial level represent not only a personal achievement but also a proud milestone for Masiphumelele High School, the broader community and the Atlas Foundation.

The programme’s success extends beyond individual achievements. Recent regional Southern Region U/20 team selections have seen significant representation from Masiphumelele rugby players (9) who have progressed through the Atlas rugby pathway, reflecting the quality of coaching and player development being delivered.

The talent has always been here, our role is to provide opportunities, guidance and support so that young people can realise their potential. Enkosi’s achievement demonstrates what is possible when dedication, talent and opportunity come together.

As women’s rugby continues to grow in South Africa, Enkosi’s success serves as an inspiration to young girls across the region who aspire to compete at the highest levels of the game.
