A Fantastic Success at the Matt Ratana Schools Cup!
On Friday, 8th November 2024, history was made as four Croydon schools—Riddlesdown, St Thomas More Catholic School Purley, Orchard Park High, and Meridian High School—came together for the inaugural Matt Ratana Schools Cup. This touch rugby tournament was far more than a day of sport; it was a celebration of community, connection, and the legacy of Matt Ratana.
Organised by TackleLondon, Project Partner of The Atlas Foundation, the event embodied the values Matt cherished: respect, resilience, and unity. Students experienced structured training sessions, spirited matches, and moments of camaraderie that will stay with them for years to come. It wasn’t just about the scores or trophies—it was about building confidence, teamwork, and creating a space where young people could thrive.
The Day in Detail
The tournament kicked off with excitement and anticipation, as students from all four schools arrived at the welcoming grounds of Old Whitgiftian RFC. For many, it was their first time stepping onto a community rugby pitch—an experience that not only showcased the sport but also introduced them to the positive and inclusive atmosphere of rugby clubs.
As the matches progressed, the competitive spirit grew, but what stood out most was the mutual respect displayed by every team. From cheering for their peers to demonstrating sportsmanship on the field, the young players truly reflected the values of Matt Ratana.
The day concluded with an emotional award ceremony:
- Riddlesdown emerged victorious, taking home the prestigious Matt Ratana Cup.
- Thomas More Titans secured the Matt Ratana Shield as runners-up.
Both teams, along with the other schools, received heartfelt applause for their hard work, resilience, and dedication throughout the day.
Words from Dr. Amy Atkinson
“History was made today as four Croydon schools competed in the first-ever Matt Ratana Croydon Schools Cup—a tournament we hope will continue for many years to come.
For the vast majority of young people attending, this was their first time in a community rugby club—a vital step in sharing our supportive community spaces.
It was a joy to see the event and our young people being cheered on by our Deputy Civic Mayor, Cllr. Richard Chatterjee, rugby club members from Old Whits, and local officers from the Metropolitan Police, many of whom are known to the students through schools liaison.
The contest was fiercely fought, with the utmost respect shown at all times. The values of our foundation were truly demonstrated in their richest form.”
A Day of Community Impact
Beyond the action on the pitch, the event created opportunities for students to forge new friendships, interact with mentors, and develop key life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership. The presence of community leaders like Deputy Civic Mayor Richard Chatterjee, rugby coaches, and Metropolitan Police officers underscored the shared commitment to nurturing and uplifting the next generation.
For many students, the tournament was a rare chance to participate in such a large event, fostering a sense of belonging and pride. It highlighted the unifying power of sport in bringing communities together and breaking down barriers.
