Bringing Language Learning to Life in Cambodia: A New Opportunity for Rural Children
In the heart of Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia, a groundbreaking initiative is transforming education for local children. Thanks to a partnership between The Atlas Foundation, WAH Foundation, and Studycat, a classroom has been converted into an interactive Language Learning Lab, designed to provide young learners with the tools they need to build essential language skills and expand their opportunities for the future.
This project has been made possible through funding from The Anita, Alex, and Annabel Nicholson Memorial Fund, a fund established by Ben Nicholson in memory of his wife and two children, who tragically lost their lives in the Sri Lanka bombings on Easter Sunday 2019. Their legacy lives on in initiatives like this, helping to create brighter futures for children around the world.

Empowering Communities Through Innovation
The WAH Foundation, dedicated to improving the lives of rural Cambodian communities, played a key role in making this project a reality. With a strong focus on clean water, healthcare, and education, WAH works closely with local leaders to ensure long-term sustainability. Their past projects have included cataract operations, midwifery and pediatric emergency care training, and clean water system installations. Their continued commitment to empowering women and children makes them a vital partner in this initiative.
“We work directly with local communities to create lasting change,” said a WAH Foundation spokesperson. “This Language Learning Lab aligns perfectly with our mission of improving education and empowering young learners.”
The Power of Language Education
For Studycat, the driving force behind this interactive learning space, language is more than just words—it’s a gateway to confidence, connection, and opportunity. The organisation believes that every child deserves the chance to learn and works globally to bring language education to children who need it most.
“At Studycat, our mission is to help children across the world discover the joy of languages,” said a Studycat representative. “With this Language Learning Lab, we are not just teaching vocabulary—we are giving children the tools to express themselves, explore the world, and shape their futures.”
A Collaborative Effort for Lasting Impact
The transformation of the classroom was made possible through the installation of tablets, an interactive whiteboard, new furniture, and a fresh coat of paint, creating an engaging environment where children can thrive. The project also would not have been possible without the dedication of Principal Mr. Angkea, whose passion for education has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. Special thanks go to Jake Whiddon, Rosie Chong and Ben Nicholson for their ongoing support in getting the project off the ground. A further thanks to our parters at WAH, in particular Phil Kitcher, who has driven this project to fruition.
This initiative is a shining example of how collaboration between organisations, community leaders, and generous donors can create lasting change. By combining education with technology, the Language Learning Lab is opening doors for Cambodian children, helping them develop the skills they need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world.
