On 16 June, as South Africa marked Youth Day, Atlas Foundation South Africa was honoured to welcome the world-renowned Barbarians rugby family for a memorable afternoon of coaching and celebration with children from Masiphumelele, Ocean View and the Dominican Deaf School.
The visit brought together everything Atlas believes in: the power of sport to open doors, build confidence and create belonging. Against the backdrop of Youth Day — a day that honours the courage, voice and potential of young South Africans — the Barbarians gave generously of their time, energy and experience, engaging directly with the children through rugby drills, teamwork and much laughter.
Rugby has long been at the heart of Atlas’s work in South Africa, serving as a pathway for education, health, inclusivity and well-being. Atlas supports young people growing up in communities where opportunity can be limited, helping them build resilience, self-belief and the educational skills to thrive both on and off the field.
The Barbarians embraced this spirit wholeheartedly. Their warmth, humour and willingness to connect made a lasting impression on every child present and the unmistakable energy that comes when rugby becomes more than a sport — when it becomes a bridge between people, communities and possibilities.
A Thank You
Atlas Foundation South Africa pays a most sincere tribute once again to the Barbarians for their engagement, extreme generosity and belief in the transformative power of rugby. Their continued support to charity through sport and the shared values that uplifts and inspire the next generation is exceptional as they walk this journey with Atlas.
The children carry with them not only new rugby memories, but also the encouragement of knowing that the wider rugby world stands alongside them. For Atlas, it was a day to honour the youth of South Africa — and to celebrate the people and partnerships that help young lives flourish through sport.
